Unemployment benefits are costing taxpayers millions, and in cities, there is much work that needs to be done. The suggestion is for participants who recieve unemployment benefits; after a reasonble 6 weeks of benefits, in order to continue thier unemployment benefits, the recipient will provide 20-30 hours per week in community service to non-profits, city and state programs. This idea, will allow for the unemployed people to use thier skills to support thier local neighborhood, city and state programs. While, at the same time allowing for city, state and non-profits to recieve services for programs in need.

I've got a similar idea on getting beneficiaries to perform. It's good to see many other people are thinking along these lines. Here's mine:

Absolutely, and I would extend a hand of help to the private sector for those struggling businesses that just can't afford hiring additional staff.

Unemployment insurance is just that, insurance...NOT WELFARE!!! This mentality that people are profiting from being unemployed is FOX NEWS, right-wing propaganda...we need re-education camps for those who have fallen victim to this right-wing plot to take down this country!!!

Some people become lazy or apathetic under unemployment, however some really need lots of time to either re-train/re-educate or they simply need time because jobs that fit them don't frequently appear. This suggestion is a penalty for unemployment insurance recipients, not a win-win. This proposal will discourage people for applying for unemployment benefits when they really need and deserve them.

When should the unemployed people look for work? Oh, never mid, we will just keep using them as slaves. Do you realize that the unemployed paid into the system in order to receive their benefits?
Thumbs Down.

I knew of someone drawing unemployment while going to school after getting out of the military and she in fact had to show proof of actively looking for a job while collecting unemployment. This may have something to do with some states regulations on drawing the funds.

Unemployment insurance should not be run by the Government. This is another system riddled with fraud and the government has no idea on how to exterminate the fraud. Get rid of entitlement spending. Find a job!

And no one should be required to pay any unemployment insurance either. If you get unemployed, just fend for yourself. Simple.

This is a State problem and not a Federal one

I completely disagree with this suggestion. Individuals who are unemployed are not receiving a government handout-- they're receiving benefits through an unemployment insurance program that they've paid in to. They should be spending their unemployed time searching for work and bettering themselves to find future work, not acting as slaves for non-profit organizations.

Turn off FOX Propaganda.
I already paid once for my benefits, what do you want me to do, pick up trash on the side of the freeway along with the inmates?
Would that make all you folks who voted this up feel better?
To "see" where our collective tax dollars were being spent?
Perhaps we could get some cheap reflective vests from China that would distinguish us as the "unemployed and lazy- so instead of being a "couch potato" we need to be forced to do something constructive with our time" people.
Perhaps you could throw out some trash so we don't just stand around.
However, if that were the case I guarantee the freeways would be the cleanest they had ever been, from Coast to Coast.

I have seen many people who have part time jobs "under the table" while drawing unemployment. Others claim they have tried to look but really haven't and no one really checks if and how these folks really tried applying for jobs. Some will not take a lower paid job than the had before, even when it is likely they will not get something close to what they earned before.
