A section should be added to the “for federal employees” webpage on www.usa.gov providing instructions on how to request federal publications that are offered to federal employees for free. For example, federal employees can request a complimentary PDF of any National Research Council, National Academy of Sciences, National Academy of Engineering, or Institute of Medicine publications (see www.nationalacademies.org). In my current job, other employees were not aware of the availability of these free reports for their research. By making this information available to federal employees, more employees can have access to these documents for free. Taxpayers would benefit because employees may spend less time and funds obtaining publications from research services that they can get for free directly from the agency. The only steps to implement this idea would be to collect this information from agencies, add a section to www.usa.gov and to promote it through federal newsletters and other outlets.
