Implement an annual “Recycle Supplies Week”. Employees can take the opportunity to clean their areas and return unused or useable office supplies back to the centralized department that maintains and distributes office supplies. If there are office locations without a centralized area then develop one or assign them to an existing location. Most of us are guilty of gradually hoarding supplies. Years go by with our desk draws filled with unused supplies. If we identify a week every year and make it a government wide effort to recycle our supplies I believe the savings could be tremendous. We could also use this week to implement other recycle supplies ideas. For example, designate an area with a heavy duty stapler, 3-hole punch, paper cutter, etc. for office use or use scrap paper instead of notebooks and post-its.
