I would like to suggest that federal agencies establish plans to ensure that resources in their cafeterias are being used efficiently. Plans could include recycling newspapers, aluminum cans, and plastic bottles. While this idea may not reduce costs in a quantifiable way, these plans would help lessen the impact these cafeterias have on the environment. For example, foam cups can be replaced with plastic cups made from sugar cane. Plates, utensils, and napkins can also be biodegradable to the extent possible. This idea could affect citizens’ lives in a tangible way. Agencies could also allow non-profit organizations to collect the cans and bottles from their cafeterias, recycle the cans and bottles and then use the proceeds towards their charitable activities. The only steps to implement this idea would be that agencies would need to establish plans to ensure that resources in their cafeterias are being used efficiently. They could also promote these plans internally and externally.
