Escape from 1948: Shorten the Work Week

Take advantage of technological advances to reduce the modern work week by 25%. Employees who work 6 hour days are more efficient and equally productive as those who work 8, and they use 25% less electricity at the office. Employees with 10 extra hours per week have more time to get exercise, reducing future health care costs and sick days used. Employees with more free time at home have more time to spend disposable... more »

Turn Welfare into Work

Require individuals who receive government assistance to work a minimum number of hours to earn that assistance. Those on government assistance (receiving tax payer money in the form of housing, subsistence, unemployment claims, etc) should be engaged in unskilled labor, or duties which they are qualified to assume (be they clerical, etc) until they are no longer on assistance and once again employed by the private sector.... more »

Promote Virtual Meetings and Conferences in the Government.

Promote Virtual Meetings and Conferences in the Government. If employees can telework from home and sign-up for virtual training online, they can certainly telework to meetings and conferences in other parts of the Country. No longer is it mandatory that a person be physically in the room. The need to have workforce detailed to different locations within the Agency (Temporary Duty Assignments) is no longer needed.... more »

Printing: Double Sided Default

I suggest you program all computer printers to have double sided printing as the default option. Currently, nearly every computer I have printed on has "single sided" as the default print option. I also notice that most people do not know, remember, or take the time to change the printing option every time. In my office I see 18-25 page packets printed single sided. We could cut the amount of paper used in half by going... more »

English first

Stop printing government forms in languages other than English. There are translation services available for those citizens that really need it.

Speak more than one language is great -- but one of them needs to be English.

Active use and promotion of Flex time, telecommuting and other time.work options

Press the federal agencies to actually allow employee use of the flex time options that are 'on the books' but too often individual management determine they do not want to employ in their divisions My boss is great and does her best to meet the requests of employees, but I have countless collegues who are not 'allowed' to access time/work options. If an employee has proven to be professional, productive, performance... more »

Reduce over-head expenses by working a 4-day work week and/or telecommuting

Federal offices which do not directly serve the public, when feasible, should either...1) move to a 4-day, 10-hr/day work week, or 2) provide for workers to telecommute from home or other place where high-speed internet is available. This would reduce some over-head expenses such as janitorial, lighting, and marginally on the heating/air conditioning of those government offices.

Prisoner must work while serving.

the prisnors must work while they are serving. They must work inside the prison or outside the prison as per crime and earn while serving. That will teach them some discipline and will have some money in their pocket to take care of them after they are free.

Elected Public Officials CAN NOT be allowed to give themselves Increased Benefits and Pay without public approval

Elected Public Servants can not vote for their own pay raises and benefits.

If a public election put someone in office then a public vote should be required to approve any increases to salary, bonus, holiday, health, and retirement benefits.

No cable T.V. for inmates

I would say stop paying for cable T.V. for inmates. They are several hard working men and woman in this country that can not afford cable T.V. but it is provided for convicted felons.

Enhanced telework program and increased use of email could save the Federal Government millions.

Implement 5 days of telework for employees and provide enforcement so that all managers undersatnd the directive. This will allow savings on real estate leasing, utilities, telecommunications, transportation vouchers, etc. Additionally, instead of such a heavy reliance on paper, make email attachments the main instrument of correspondence. This should not be difficult as most correspondence is donw via word processing... more »
