BALANCING LIFE AND THE MISSION: COMPRESSED SCHEDULING IN LAW ENFORCEMENT

Over the past few decades, many state and municipal law enforcement departments across the country have studied the advantages and disadvantages of implementing a compressed work schedule (CWS) for their uniformed officers and agents. “Lateral thinking,” coined by Edward de Bono (1970) is a set of approaches and techniques designed to find radically new approaches to problems - to come at them from the side rather than ...more »

Train Locally – Use Existing FEB Training in 28 Locations Across U.S.

Large cost savings could be gained if federal leaders were encouraged to train their employees in the cities they work. Approximately 88% of the Federal Workforce is located outside of Washington D.C. This is better for the environment and will save the federal government in travel and per diem costs. Federal training already exists in 28 large cities through the Federal Executive Boards (www.Feb.Gov). FEB sponsored ...more »

Implement electronic fax programs for all government agencies.

Implement electronic fax programs for all government agencies. Fax machines, ink, paper, administrative time, scanners, scanning time, etc. Millions of dollars in time and resources are spent processing paper faxes. Electronic fax programs directly to computer email would be a big cost saver. It supports the green initiative and the reduction of paper initiative.

Why are we still doing timesheets?

At the State Department, we have a "timekeeper" in each office who is in charge of submitting everyone's timesheets. Even though the vast majority of employees are salaried, and thus the "standard" 40-hour workweek gets reported even though most people work much longer. These must be submitted even if the employee takes no leave during the pay period. It makes no sense that we continue to have to submit timesheets every ...more »

Replace Fax Machines with Internet Fax Service to Send & Receive Faxes via Email

Traditional fax machines are extremely wasteful. However, many employees across the government need to send and receive faxes for a variety of reasons. We should replace all fax machines with internet fax services, which provide fax-to-email and email-to-fax capabilities. That means you can receive any fax as an email (comes in just like a scanned document), or send any email or scanned document to a traditional fax ...more »
