BALANCING LIFE AND THE MISSION: COMPRESSED SCHEDULING IN LAW ENFORCEMENT

Over the past few decades, many state and municipal law enforcement departments across the country have studied the advantages and disadvantages of implementing a compressed work schedule (CWS) for their uniformed officers and agents. “Lateral thinking,” coined by Edward de Bono (1970) is a set of approaches and techniques designed to find radically new approaches to problems - to come at them from the side rather than ...more »

Sort SAVE Award ideas by common threads

There have been some wonderful ideas captured in the SAVE Award process. Also, many ideas are being repeated several times. It would be good to take a look at all the ideas and sort them by theme instead of agency and find the top ideas that way. For example, several people have suggested a post for recycling items that are useful, one was from NASA, DHS, and USDA. They all are suggesting basically the same thing, a repository ...more »

Deceased but paid

Social Security currently loses millions of dollars and waste thousands of hours because of deceased beneficiaries who continue to get paid. We have a system called DACUS to track these checks and to terminate these checks. In my experience, the vast majority of these DACUS alerts are present because funeral homes do not contact the Social Security Administration to report deaths. We spend countless hours tracking down ...more »

Out of Jail, where's my Check?

We should not allow a SSI recipient who is currently on SSI and then is convicted of a crime in which time is served, the chance to get back on SSI; at the very least for some years. Currently if I was convicted of a felony or served time in jail, I would lose my government job and no longer have the privilege of earning government money.. Sound cruel? I don't think so. So why can we not eliminate-or at least punish ...more »

Social Security and Medicare Unite

As a service representative for the Social Security Administration, every day I see people come into our field office who think that we are Medicare. Sure, we do limited things for Medicare- since they don't have offices for public service-such as part B applications and part D subsidy applications, however, the majority of the people I see that think that we are Medicare come in because they have detailed and complex ...more »

Coordinate death records with SSA payments

Currently, the Social Security Administration continues to pay benefits to the deceased until someone notifies them that the person is deceased, at which time they stop payments and try to recoup any payments made after the time of death. Coordinating death records with SSA would save money currently spent on making and attempting to recoup these erroneous payments.

Scheduling two Shifts of White Collar Workers per Day Instead of One to Cut Overhead Costs and Carbon Footprint by 50%

This idea would also help us avoid future oil spills by becoming less dependent on foreign oil .At the end of the Industrial Revolution our government entered the White Collar Era. We have grown up during the Information Age which morphed into the Digital Age that we are in right now. We seemed to have forgotten the basic concept that made the Industrial Revolution one of the most important events in human history. "Interchangeable ...more »

Expand Fraud Investigations

I suggest the Social Security Administration expand the Agency’s number of Cooperative Disability Investigations (CDI) units, as well as the number of employees (or contractors) dedicated to investigating fraudulent allegations. There are a substantial number of substantive fraud allegations that are referred to OIG and CDI but not investigated. There are not enough employees to investigate all of the allegations being ...more »
