Staff Accountant

Stop monetary awards to GS15 and above for a year and return to the Treasury at the end of the Fiscal Year unspent budget amount. In addition, stop the office moves. Hotel per diem savings split

Hotel room cost is one of the largest individual expenses I see come through for Federal travel. There is currently no incentive for an employee to stay at any place charging less than the maximum per diem. I suggest that if the traveler stays at a hotel with a rate lower than per diem (or even stays with a friend/relative), then the traveler should be allowed to split the cost of the savings with the government. ...more »

Clearances should be transportable amongst government agencies

Security clearances are used by multiple agencies (DoD, DOE, DNFSB...) but there is no reciprocity between agencies. A Q-clearance granted by DoD should be "portable" if the employee goes to DOE and requires a Q-clearance for that job. Clearances are very expensive (paperwork, investigations, interviews, etc) and the delay in obtaining the new clearance prevents the employee from being fully productive when the join ...more »

Relocate DOE to more energy efficient building nearby

The Department of Energy should lead by example. The Forrestal Building is known to be terribly energy inefficient, and occupants of the building almost universally hate it because of lack of daylight, uncomfortable temperatures, etc. My suggestion is to move DOE headquarters from its current location in Forrestal to the Constitution Center (400 7th St SW). The owners of that building have made such a proposal and claim ...more »

Energy Conservation: What Gets Measured Gets Done

Many in the federal government are working on building conservation plans. The problem is that there is no way to quantiatively measure success. For example, the Forrestal building is metered, but not individual offices and/or divisions. However, there are 4 circuit breakers or so for each Forrestal floor. Here is the idea: install a meter at each circuit breaker for each floor of EVERY FEDERAL BUILDING in the United ...more »

Incentives to Save on Government Travel

Booking expensive flights, hotel, rental car and standard travel items could be alleviated with incentives for government employees to save. Rather than take a flight from D.C. to Philadelphia, take a train. Rather than stay at a hotel, stay with friends or family in the city. And rather than using a rental car, take public transportation in the location if feasible. All of these come at a certain inconvenience, yet ...more »

Carbon sequestration

Bury all the paper the government uses instead or recycling. This will 1) save the cost of recycling, and 2) reduce the chemicals used in recycling, and 3)sequester the carbon in the paper underground reducing the overall CO2 in the atmosphere.

The Light Effect

Turn off all lights when out of office such as lunch breaks, meetings and at the end of the day. If each individual turns off lights, the government can preserve energy and save money.
