Reducing Computer Costs

All government computers should have disk defragmenter softrware installed on them, if not already, and should be kept on all the time. Without this software, hard disks would last 2 years at the most. With this software, hard disks would last between 6 and 10 years, 6 at a minimum. This would not only save money on hard disk replacement, but computer people could save time by not having to manually repair hard disks ...more »

Double Sided Printing - SAVE PAPER

Paper is a very costly expense for the US government. Many trees are required to meet our paper demands. The US government could greatly reduce its demand on paper as well as become more environmental friendly by installing a very inexpensive and small component to our laser printers. It's a small plastic part called a duplex unit and it will automatically print on both sides of a sheet of paper. This implementation ...more »

Registered Nurse

I suggest you hire individuals for specific jobs within the federal government and stop the wasted money using contracted staff that you pay more for. This includes PHS personnel in the FBOP. They get paid more and take the BOP nurses merit promotion positions and their bidded posts. It costs the government less to pay a BOP nurse than it is to pay for PHS to hold our positions. Their pay is higher. The government pays ...more »

Federal Employee Directory/Locator

The Federal Government is often criticized for it's inability to effectively communicate with other government agencies. As a federal employee I have worked for three different agencies. When making that transfer from one agency to another, I became the liaison between the two agencies. More often than not, we as Federal Employees are unaware of how best to contact a fellow Federal Employee at another Agency. If a ...more »

Legalize marijuana

Legalize, regulate, and tax marijuana instead of fighting it. We would save money on law enforcement and prisons and would make money on taxes and fees associated with the legal, recreational use of marijuana.

Cut Travel Costs by Utilizing Web-Based Training Programs

Implement more cost-effective training requirements that are to met by each agency. For example, require agencies to utilize web-based training programs in lieu of in-person training seminars. The costs for in-person training are exponentially larger compared to the costs of conducting trainng over CENTRA or an equivalent, web-based program. Not only are the costs of travel quite large (to include airfare, hotel, ...more »

Take simple steps to reduce printing costs

The Federal government spends more than a billion dollars on printing every year, much of which is wasteful, and all of which is harmful to the environment. Some studies estimate that an average employee prints 7,200 pages per year. There are a number of simple steps that the government can take to reduce its printing costs without affecting productivity: First, all agencies should set printers to print duplex (double ...more »

Executive Branch Suggestion Program

The Save Award is a great idea, but is a once-a-year event. I suggest an Executive Branch-wide Suggestion Program. Many Departments and Agencies have very robust suggestion programs (the Air Force, for example) but many do not. If an Executive Branch-wide program would be too onerous to manage, than an Executive Order should be written that requires every Department and Agency to implement a Suggestion Program that ...more »

Lights Out

Lights, copiers, computers are frequently left on in federal offices after hours. Employees should power down before leaving at night to save electricity!
