Mail Social Security Statements Every Three Years

Stop mailing Social Security statements annually and instead mail them every three years. As part of their tax returns, most people retain the info they need to verify the info in the statement, so they would not be inconvenienced by less frequent mailing of the statements.

Eliminate $255 Lump-Sum Death Benefit

This one-time benefit no longer satisifies its original intent, has never been increased with inflation, and does little to decrease cost of a person's final expenses. The cost to the government and taxpayer to accept, adjudicate, process, and make payment further decreases its actual value. Eliminate it all together and extend the solvency of social security; our most necessary trust fund and social safety net.

Remove all child benefits from SSI

SSI is a program for disabled individuals who are in need and have not worked enough to be covered under Social Security disability. SSI stands for supplemental security income, when we pay disabled children who’s income are we supplementing? Provide children with health care (which is already covered by most states), and let the child’s parents provide the financial support. If congress is unwilling to stop the program ...more »

Establish a "Family Maximum" for SSI

As we do have "Family Maximum" rules for entitlement programs, why not one for eligibility programs? States have established levels of eligibility for households on Public Assistance already. We should adopt or establish similar rules for the SSI program. It will reduce the amount of cash payments currently being made.

Get SSA out of the Attorney Fee processing business

Instead, when someone chooses to be represented and is awarded benefits, send the entire retroactive payment to the attorney (or other) representative on account of the person---like private companies and insurance payments. There are Bar Associations and rules that attorneys must follow and be in compliance to practice law. Get SSA out of the business and save the administrative cost.

Eliminate the need for a spend down on a large sum of money-let them keep their health coverage!

When individuals who are on SSI receive some sort of financial windfall which is over the resource limit and they go into non-pay (N04) status the money they receive should be divided by the SSI benefit amount and they should not be put back into pay until the number of months are up. These individual should be able to keep their health coverage though while they are in N04. Too many times you see these people blow ...more »

Social Security Statements Going Green

Currently Social Security prints and mails over 150 Million Social Security Statements every year. The Statements include earnings history and estimates of the Social Security benefits workers and their families can expect to receive. Currently, the only option Social Security allows is for these to be printed and mailed. My idea is to allow this Statement to be available in real-time by allowing workers to be able to ...more »

Social Security Notices

Currently claimants receive decisions, changes, and updates on their claims only by mailed paper notices. Nowadays people move between different residences or get there mail in care of somebody else. We currently allow individuals the ability to track their claim on-line, but still mail out the notices. My suggestion is that we should allow individuals the option to receive an e-mail when a decision is made on their ...more »

Allow return to work reports through SSA online services

Instead, on making a claimant call or go into an office to report a return to work, we should allow them to submit that on-line. This would allow a receipt or acknowledgement for the claimant that their return to work has been received by Social Security. It would also allow Social Security to follow-up and timely process this return to work before it becomes an overpayment. Social Security loses millions of dollars on ...more »

SSA Trust Fund Fiscal Sustainability

Instead of raising the full retirement age to 70, which will not have an effect on expenditures for 20 years and does not increase collections, raise the minimum requirement to be "insured" for coverage. Currently it is 40 QCs (10 years of work) for most individuals with special rules based on specific ages (i.e. 6 quarters in 3 years for less than 24, or just a year and a half of work). Doubling the minimum quarters ...more »

Eliminate wasted SSA letters.

Stop sending Social Security letters to people who are still working.

Every year I get a flyer from the SSA telling me about how much time I've worked, how much social security I'd get if I retired today, etc. Yeah, I'm 42 - not retiring any time soon.

If people want this info they can call and ask for it.
