GPC Usage

Hello, I suggest that the government allow government contracts to be paid out with government purchase cards, for re-accuring services over the current single purchase limit of $2,500.00 per year. I suggest the limit be increased to $10,000.00, and that the usage of the Government Purchase Card be the mandatory method of payment for contracts >$10,000.00. There are many services that could benefit from this, that ...more »

Re-Evaluate the Federal Travel System

I suggest you re-evaluate the Federal Travel system. Under the current system, Feds are unable to take advantage of sales/deals offered by airlines and hotels. Often times, the federal rate is much higher than the sale/deal rate. Savings stemming from changes to the travel system would impact not only the budget for the Department of Commerce but all federal departments. As a specific example, I recently registered ...more »

Reward for Frugal Spending

I believe all the local and federal governments to include all of the federal entities practice a flawed financial practice. States, agencies and military branches are penalized for not spending all of their federal funding when given during the fiscal year. For example, after a certain federal entity is given their budget for the year, it is expected to use all of it, but if they don’t use it all they run the possibility ...more »

Private Sector Fiscal/Budget Management Model

At the end of each fiscal year there is a spending frenzy in many Federal agencies as they try to spend remaining funding so they aren't "penalized" the next budget cycle. This practice needs to stop because it costs taxpayers money; the end result is often supplies, equipment, or services that are "nice to have" instead of "need to have." With this in mind, Federal managers and employees need to be rewarded based on ...more »

Better financial reporting is necessary

Eliminate budgetary accounting and better apply the concept of full cost accounting. Use not-for-profit accounting principles. This would simplify Fed Gov accounting, save money, provide much more financial transparency, and provide much more useful information to the users of Fed Gov financial statements. Full cost accounting is currently being used to apply overhead type costs to programs. I'd like to know how ...more »

Temporary Duty Housing Costs

When employees are away from home on temporary duty assignments, they are housed at the per diem lodging rates (in a hotel, apartment, etc). For each agency, there are some cities that are visited more often than others are. In those cities, federal agencies should consider purchasing apartments / condominiums and furnish them to house employees. If purchasing buildings is not an option, consider purchasing the contents ...more »

Say No to the Use it or Loose it policy.

Across all forms of Government from Washington, down to local state governments there is an on going budget policy that needs to be abolished. It’s the use it or loose it policy. If you don't use the entire budget your agency gets less money next year. This demands waste, government agencies need to be rewarded for not spending all of their budget monies, not punished.

Stop price discrepancies!

Government suppliers should be held to the same competitive standards as are civilian shopping options. We should create a way for employees to report price discrepancies between the companies the government uses and the wide range of civilian options. For example, if a toner cartridge is $60 from our supplier and $30 on the Staples website, an employee should have a course of action instead of having to just spend the ...more »

Stop end of year wasteful spending!

Change the way anual budgets are decided. Currently if my budget is $10M and I only spend $8M, my budget for the next year will be reduced to $8M. This encourages goverment agencies to spend all money that has been budgeted to them. Allow agencies to roll over unspent funds into the next year. Don't penalize agencies for spending less than their budget!
