Consolidating Travel Actions Under DTS

I suggest you consolidate all travel authorizations, orders and vouchers under DTS and shut down eFinance. Currently, some organizations refuse to issue travel orders through DTS when cross-org funding is required which causes the need for non-DTS travel vouchers. This is redundant and wasteful. We invested in DTS, now it's time to use it to recoup the investment and standardize travel procedures DoD-wide.

Automate DTS hotel tax exempt form so that individual traveller does not have to fill it out.

Currently, when a traveller goes TDY, they have an option to file a lodging tax exempt form. Many people do not file these forms resulting in an additional cost to the Agency of 11-13% in hotel tax. By having DTS automatically check if the hotel accepts tax exempt forms and forcing the employee to file these forms (or automating the system so these forms are filed on behalf of the traveller without the traveller having ...more »

Electronic Time and Travel

As a Department of the Army Intern, I have submitted all of my travel orders and vouchers electronically through the Defense Travel System. Previous to my work for the Federal Government when I worked in the private sector, I have always submitted my timesheets electronically. Now that I am going to be promoted out of the Intern program I will have to start filling out all of my timesheets and travel worksheets with pen ...more »

Enforcement of use of Govt Lodging in DTS

I suggest the Defense Travel System (DTS) be fixed to enforce use of government lodging as primary lodging source for all Mil/Civ/CTR personnel traveling under orders and allow non-govt lodging ONLY in the case of a non-availability. DTS currently does not give the ability to do this.

DTS TRAVEL

Potential gov't buyers should be allowed to purchase travel under the lowest airline bid, (DTS) and not just what GSA has provided. Some airlines offer lower priced airfare.

DO AWAY WITH THE DEFENCE TRAVEL SYSTEM (DTS) AND OPT FOR AMUCH MORE STREAMLINED SYSTEM WHICH GIVES LINKS TO COMERAL TRAVEL SITES

DTS is a complicated and costly system, not only does it not book the travel electronically for you, it go to a travel agency that dose that and charges you a fee. The next problem is it bases all of its air fares on the GSA City Pares program. You can almost always go to commercial sites like Expedia or Orbitz and find lower fares, the GAS City Pairs program is costly and just need to done away with completely, Suggestion ...more »

Use DTS to secure better prices for flights

Modify DTS to eliminate Dulles International Airport (IAD) as the default termination for flights into Washington DC area. Fares for flights into Dulles are typically 3 to 4 times higher than similar flights into Ronald Reagan National (DCA) or Baltimore-Washington International (BWI). Flights into Dulles could be offered by DTS as alternates, but traveler would have to justify additional expense to Approving Official. ...more »

Do we always need to buy refundable airplane tickets?

Does the military ALWAYS have to buy fully refundable tickets, which cost more? How many commercial flights do military personnel actually end up having to cancel or change? In the grand scheme of things, we might be able to save money by buying non-refundable tickets (at least part, if not most of the time) and paying the penalties when plans change. It may seem wasteful in those individual instances to cancel or ...more »

Let Military Personnel Book Their Own Travel

Last year I used the Defense Travel System (DTS) to book a flight from Washington, DC to Monterey, CA for a conference. My ticket cost us taxpayers over $2000! For that kind of money, I could have flown first class, but I ended up in coach on one of the worst seats on the plane - in the very last row of the plane, just in front of the bathroom and the galley. You know, one of the seats that don't recline. I am SURE ...more »

Air Force Civilian PCS Process AFPC

I suggest you..The permanent Change of Station (PCS) process for Air Force civilians is dysfunctional. Currently, all civilian PCS orders are done by hand. Once the employee is notified of a management directed reassignment it will be months before they have their orders in hand. Often, employees don’t receive their orders until 30 days before they are scheduled to PCS, after the request had been submitted 60-90 days ...more »

Southwest Discount AirFare for Official Travel

Allow DTS travelers to purchase a discount airline ticket for official travel, if they are willing to accpet the risks of travel being cancelled. For instance a ticket on Southwest will often be 50% less than the government ticket. If the trip is cancelled then Soutwest credits you the entire amount for future travel.
