Work is an Activity, Not a Location

I suggest greater adaptation in telecommuting. As a frequent traveller, I experience various outages when returning to the home office keeping me from logging back into the network - network port is shut down, SIPRNET access is shut down, desk equipment falls out of some criteria for access. I have to rely on networking tricks to get a resemblance of working in the office - none are authorized yet there is no speed ...more »

Grid Computing Vs. Expensive Supercomputers

Using distributed grid computing various government agencies/organizations can tap into the Gigaflops of computing power available amongst the desktops of gov and DoD employees worldwide. Rather than buy a massive expensive supercomputer, contract a company to build a grid computing client that will run the computationally heavy tasks such as simulations. This is cheaper in the long run. If the tasks are not security ...more »

How to save power and still auto-update Gov PCs

Require all government computers to automatically turn off after 1+ hours of not being used. If Windows Systems Management Server or WSUS needs to push updates out, have the remote server use Wake-On-LAN to fire up the computers for updates and then send the remote shutdown command. This solves the problem having to have the computers on for updates, and saves power when they are not being updated. This would not be ...more »

Information Assurance workforce

Hundreds of hours are required to become certified as an Information Assurance Security Officer (IASO) in Dept. of Army organizations- and all organizations are required to have at least two IASOs on orders at all times. This includes hundreds, if not thousands, of very small military units and installation offices, managing IA compliance for as few as 5-15 systems and users. Hundreds of man-hours are invested in bringing ...more »

In-Source Network Engineering

Recommend the DOD return to having leadership promote its use of organic government IT engineering and technician staff to provide mission critical network engineering services. This governmental staff can partner with equipment manufacturerers and vendors of mission systems to better understand the integration of these mission systems and forming a consortium of networking experts. Recently, a major reorganization ...more »

End Mandatory Use Contracts in the Air Force

Open up the use of all FAR approved contracts in the Air Force and normalize IT in a different manner rather than implementing mandatory use contracts that require hours of justification to write NETCENTS waivers.

UNDOCUMENTED IMMIGRATION SOLUTION: SELF FUNDED DETERRENT PREVENTING THE HIRING OF UNDOCUMENTED WORKERS

I suggest a new type of proactive solution in the form of an enforcement system to deter the hiring of undocumented workers (illegal aliens, deportable/inadmissible aliens) through self funded economic incentives (monetary rewards) generated by fines. It will encourage the public to report violators and discourage employers from hiring undocumented workers. A percentage of the fines levied on employers of undocumented ...more »

Government-wide Reuse and Disposal Initiative

I propose that a Government-wide Reuse and Disposal program be established. This would allow for quantifiable cost savings in procurement and disposal across the entire government. It would also result in a measurable reduced impact on the environment. Too often equipment that is disposed of within one agency is still useful to another. A computer that was used for high speed data analysis 3 years ago is still more than ...more »

Default Typeset

Change all default typeset to Century Gothic, which saves 30% more ink than Arial. This would result in millions of dollars in savings for the government, with a very simple change.

Elevate IT to Mission Critical for Greater Accountability

Elevate Information Technology to mission critical status instead of mission support to instill higher visibility, accountability, and funding - saving potentially millions of dollars and providing a higher level of services to all levels of the organization - this may speak specifically to DOC-NOAA where IT is so distributed and work to bring it together for the greater good often fail leaving a trail of monely spent ...more »
