End the Lump Sum Death Payment (LSDP). We do not need to give out this payment. If there are survivors, the benefits they will receive from that (if eligible) will far outweigh the small LSDP that is given.
Eliminate the $255 lump sum death benefit. With the largest generation of all time getting to retirement age, this will be an enormous savings. The amount paid does not really assist in a meaningful way with the high cost of burial expenses. The savings could be used to extend solvency of Social Security or to eliminate the 24 month waiting period for disabled workers to receive Medicare.
