Connect the federal dots and cut the fat

The OMB Director directs agencies to “cut 5 percent of their budget by reducing or terminating poor performing or low priority programs…” Haven’t we tried this before? In fact, we make budget cuts in programs within agencies as a regular budget exercise. Above the line, below the line. I did a quick look on USA.gov. There are approx. 450 federal agencies, boards, commissions, committees, and that includes 15 departments, ...more »

Prioritization Training

It is a byproduct of our multitasking culture that many managers, especially middle managers, don't know how to prioritize workload. To many people prioritizing means multitasking, do everything but do it in a random if convenient order. The difference between what is important and what is merely urgent is frequently lost, and nice-to-do's get as much attention as anything else. No thought is given to actually restricting ...more »

Cut contracting costs and review DoD management model for effeciency

I suggest Drastically cut contracting costs by using service members for the jobs in which they were trained. Why pay millions of dollars to a contractor when there are already personnel on the federal payroll in the Armed Forces that are trained to do the same thing the contractor does? For example, generator mechanics down range are relegated to escorts for the contracted generator mechanics and cooks are handing ...more »

Last year alone, GSA spent $287 Million to buy 17, 205 new vehicles to its fleet bringing the new number to about 220, 205 vehicles. Each vehicle than requires insurance, gas, toll expenses, parking fees in some instances, violations etc etc. Lest not forget most of ...more »

UNDOCUMENTED IMMIGRATION SOLUTION: SELF FUNDED DETERRENT PREVENTING THE HIRING OF UNDOCUMENTED WORKERS

I suggest a new type of proactive solution in the form of an enforcement system to deter the hiring of undocumented workers (illegal aliens, deportable/inadmissible aliens) through self funded economic incentives (monetary rewards) generated by fines. It will encourage the public to report violators and discourage employers from hiring undocumented workers. A percentage of the fines levied on employers of undocumented ...more »

FUND WATERSENSE! You know the VALUE OF CLEAN WATER, but do you really know its TRUE COST?

Similar to Energy Star, WaterSense is a voluntary partnership program developed by EPA that seeks to promote water efficiency and conservation through increasing the market for water-efficient products with demonstrated exceptional performance, while also encouraging innovative marketing low water-use practices. Also like Energy Star, WaterSense allows products that are tested and proven to meet EPA specifications to ...more »

SOAR ... high ...

The change needs to come from Top Down. Management must be willing to relocate to a different position after 3 years. It makes an authoritiy reduntant, ineffective and less economical after 3 years.

Quit Duplicating Security Clearances

Currently, people who hold security clearances in both a civilian position and as a military Reservist must submit clearance paperwork twice, be investigated/reinvestigated twice, and interviewed twice. This duplication requires separate investigators to go through the exact same data, the exact same questions, and the exact same procedures at double the cost and time. Removing this practice could save hundreds of thousands ...more »

Reduce or Eliminate Executive Motor Pools!

Executive motor pools should be dramatically reduced or eliminated. Senior officials should use public transportation wherever possible, not government vehicles. The cost savings include less need for these: parking spaces, vehicle purchase, vehicle maintenance, personal drivers, and motor pool management. If public transportation is not available, they should conduct their business electronically, carpool, or use ...more »

Save money with less turnover

When there is turnover, and need to train new employees, send them to school, it is costly to any business entity, including the government. Management should consder the effect on the budget and save the government monies by determining why there is turnover, why people are leaving -- and do something to improve the culture, and also not promote incessantly, as if all who get promoted qualify. Instead of encouraging ...more »
