Buy Instead of Rent Government Facilities

Buy the land and the buildings government offices are housed in instead of paying rent on them for years on end. This way a finite amount of money will be spent on housing an office or agency instead of a constant outpouring of government funds for rent that will never be recouped. When new buildings are built the government can recoup some of the cost of the original building if sold or even rented to a non-government ...more »

Change Airfare Costs/Contracts

Current airfare costs for Government employees is overly expensive. Part of that is due to the flexibility in being able to cancel or change flights at a moments notice without paying any additional cost. However, we're paying hundreds of dollars more per ticket just to have that flexibility when a majority of travelers don't change flights. Meanwhile, if Government had the flexibility to choose regular airfare prices, ...more »

GOV TRIP - Utilize Commercial Online Travel Booking - NOT GOVTRIP - AND GET COMMERCIAL FARES !

By using an online commercial travel booking service such as Travelocity or Orbitz we could save millions - literally. By using GovTrip we are wasting millions of dollars by 1. untold employee hours (and likely the most money) wasted due to poor website application functionality, 2. not being able to book the least expensive options, 3. the cost of the application itself, 4. difficulty in processing travel vouchers after ...more »

Combine Requests for Information to our Customers: i.e. Return Census and Tax Forms Together

The same information is often requested from multiple agencies (name, address, dependents, and income). Where possible combine forms across agencies to consolidate the requests we make of our customers. Immediate benefits will include: • Consolidate requests to our customers (in 2010 we submitted our tax and census requests within weeks of each other) • Reduce duplicate envelope cost, a more “green” approach • ...more »

Train Locally – Use Existing FEB Training in 28 Locations Across U.S.

Large cost savings could be gained if federal leaders were encouraged to train their employees in the cities they work. Approximately 88% of the Federal Workforce is located outside of Washington D.C. This is better for the environment and will save the federal government in travel and per diem costs. Federal training already exists in 28 large cities through the Federal Executive Boards (www.Feb.Gov). FEB sponsored ...more »

After the suggestions have been tested for its validity ...more »

Pitch the Penny

Eliminate pennies. The cost too much to make, too much to transport, too much to count, and many end up lost into the environment. Preserve our natural resources and reduce pollution doing away with the costly penny. Rounding prices to the nearest nickel will be simple and reduce wear on pockets.

Year-end funds carry over

Allow field units (lowest levels of organization) to carry over 1/2 or more of their unspent funds each year. This way, the government would still save 1/2 the funds, and the units would have use of the funds the next year. As it is, year end funds are often spent on things that end up being unnecessary because otherwise the unit will never see that money again.

Optional lump sum transfer of station benefit payments

I recently accepted a new job and was fortunate to receive the governments quite generous relocation benefits. These benefits were so generous, they cost American taxpayers approximately $140K. I suggest providing an optional lump sum relocation benefit for employees and let them handle their move on their own. I would have gladly accepted a lump sum payment of $75K and would have fared much better. Lump sum relocation ...more »
