GSA Fleet Sharing and Accountability Could Save $6Billion and Environment

GSA has about 212,000 vehicles in its fleet divided among 75 federal agencies. Most of these vehicles are assigned to individuals ie. one vehicle one man. Last year alone, GSA spent $287 Million to buy 17, 205 new vehicles to its fleet bringing the new number to about 220, 205 vehicles. Each vehicle than requires insurance, gas, toll expenses, parking fees in some instances, violations etc etc. Lest not forget most of ...more »

UNDOCUMENTED IMMIGRATION SOLUTION: SELF FUNDED DETERRENT PREVENTING THE HIRING OF UNDOCUMENTED WORKERS

I suggest a new type of proactive solution in the form of an enforcement system to deter the hiring of undocumented workers (illegal aliens, deportable/inadmissible aliens) through self funded economic incentives (monetary rewards) generated by fines. It will encourage the public to report violators and discourage employers from hiring undocumented workers. A percentage of the fines levied on employers of undocumented ...more »

Default Typeset

Change all default typeset to Century Gothic, which saves 30% more ink than Arial. This would result in millions of dollars in savings for the government, with a very simple change.

Reduce Paper Waste by Using Dual Sided Paper Printing

My suggestion is to set up the printers to print dual sided. I know it is not as probable to go to a paperless system but we can reduce the amount of paper we use just by printing on both sides of the page and it would cut our paper consumption down by half. Instead of printing out a 50 page document, why not print out a 25 page document front and back??

Paper and Printing Reduction: Mega Ideas!!!

Lots of ideas to reduce paper and printing costs: Duplex (double-sided) printing default, no more glossy paper, print 2 pages per side of paper, reduce graphics, use most economical print font, no more personal printers, raise print consciousness via emailed policy and agenda item at all-hands meetings.

Scratch This! (Pad, that is).

I have a suggestion to save money - government wide. I call it "Scratch this! (pad, that is)." This is a very simple idea with huge cost-savings. When I was in the private sector, I worked at a hotel/resort that conducted business with a printing company (letterhead, business cards, etc.) We were constantly steno pads, tablets of paper, etc., for folks to jot down notes (even though those notes were of a temporary ...more »

Electronic Format for all current paper documents

Change Policy to give electronic format for all requests, unless other format is specifically stated. For example, responding to freedom of information act requests, all paper documents must remain paper, one sided printing, in the current policy. This needs to be updated and electronic format such as PDF should be the default. A PDF is exactly the same quality as a paper copy, losing no information, saving paper, ink, ...more »

Eliminate personal desktop printers

Eliminate personal desktop printers Use printing stations for all, defaulting to double sided printing. In the event of confidencial material, individuals can submit a request to aquire a desktop printer, but this would drastically reduce printer and ink purchases, and paper as more people will not be temped to print as much because it will not be at their fingertips.

Nice Booklets

Today I received "Physical Security & Emergency Preparedness Guide" and "Plain talk about ethics" They are in nicely printed, professionally bound booklets. These were mailed to our POD (I assume to each group secretary to give to each employee). WHY? An email with a PDF attachment would have saved postage and printing costs and employees would still have received the required information.

Concerned about Waste

configure all printers to default to double-sided printing automatically. prompt all print jobs to print "2 sheets per page" as well. for casual background reading, 2 sheets per page, double sided saves alot of paper over time. it's like getting four pages onto one.

Eliminate Fee-for-Service Funding Mechanism for Publishing Services at USGS

I suggest that you eliminate the fee-for-service funding mechanism for publishing services at the U.S. Geological Survey. The time and effort spent on managing the Enterprise Publishing Network's accounting process is wasteful and detracts from the time workers spend on getting the actual reports edited and produced for scientists. The scientists resent the costs they must pay out of their project funds to get material ...more »
