Making Radioactive Waste Safe and Saving Money to Boot

I suggest you instruct the Department of Energy (DOE) to immediately employ the process of Nuclear Remediation to make spent nuclear fuel non-radioactive and safe. The process was developed by Paul Brown, PhD and involves bombarding nuclear waste with specific types of energy to cause it to release its stored energy and become a nonradioactive, safe substance in the process. The savings would be all the money we currently... more »

Remove Poor DOE Managers!

Poor managers kill morale, show favoritism to their buddies, slow down performance & production of the employees that get it done, and don't recognize the right employees. Are there mandatory SUP or MAN training courses that are required to become a DOE Manager/Supervisor? Is there a competency requirement? How about a DOE Manager Certification Prorgam with Level I, II III & IV? Let the employees rate their performance... more »

Pull major construction mgt (anything over particular $ threshold) from agencies + consolidate it in the Corp of Engineers

I suggest you... Pull major construction management (anything over a particular dollar threshold) from the various agencies and consolidate it in the Corp of Engineers (or equivalent) in a Federal Construction group. Right now there is redundancy and it is a seller’s market for large contractors when there is a building being added to the National Laboratories. For facilities that house technology, there is merit to... more »

Increase jobs and training while reducing Carbon Footprint by using renewable energy!

I suggest you take serious the need to reduce our federal carbon foot print by funding federally owned facilities to make necessary retrofits to make the exterior of buildings energy efficient and to replace fossil fuel systems with renewable energy systems. In my region, the eastern region of the Forest Service I calculated back in 2009 that at it would take 38 million to make all the necessary modifications. If we... more »

Alternative Energy

Give a tax credit, or something to that effect, for installing solar panels on your house. Then have an incentive to send energy back to the grid if it isn't used. I'm not quite sure where this is implemented, but I believe it is in Norway. This will also free up money that would've been spent on the electric bill to go back into the economy. It will not hurt the electric companies though, as they will still need technicians... more »

Affordable Housing Program

transfer surplus Federal land to local municipalities to use for responsibly planned low cost green housing

For DOE national laboratory, Veterans Administration campuses, and military installation (DOD) campuses- Identify the real estate required to support the growth plan through 2021, and if a laboratory has no viable plan, transfer the surplus Federal land to local municipalities and manage it by a cross agency panel consisting of HUD, DOE, FDA and EPA to use for responsibly planned low cost green housing, wind farms (where... more »

Create Housing for Ex-Offenders

I would like to see us create transitional housing for ex-offenders by using closed military installations across the country. These facilities offer housing quarters which could fall under the jurisdiction of HUD. These facilities usually have barracks type sleeping quarters, open areas on the property where case managers, job training programs, mental health providers could work with them transitioning them back into... more »

Electronic Training Documents vs. Paper = Big Savings

I work in the Training Department at a DOE facility. We go through cases and cases of printer paper a month printing out "qualifiication packages" that all 800+ personnel use to maintain their qualifications. We print the original, the person makes two copies (1 for themselves and 1 for their supervisor in case it gets lost). Some people have multiple qualifications making multiple copies of each! And all qualifications... more »

DOE National Laboratories (Government Owned and Operated)

Make all or the larger DOE national laboratories into government owned and operated laboratories (staffed by federal workers instead of contractors). This is common in DOD and I would suspect that the DOD laboratories are operated cheaper than the DOE laboratories (salaries and bonuses are less for federal employees).
