How to save power and still auto-update Gov PCs

Require all government computers to automatically turn off after 1+ hours of not being used. If Windows Systems Management Server or WSUS needs to push updates out, have the remote server use Wake-On-LAN to fire up the computers for updates and then send the remote shutdown command. This solves the problem having to have the computers on for updates, and saves power when they are not being updated. This would not be... more »

GSA Fleet Sharing and Accountability Could Save $6Billion and Environment

GSA has about 212,000 vehicles in its fleet divided among 75 federal agencies. Most of these vehicles are assigned to individuals ie. one vehicle one man. Last year alone, GSA spent $287 Million to buy 17, 205 new vehicles to its fleet bringing the new number to about 220, 205 vehicles. Each vehicle than requires insurance, gas, toll expenses, parking fees in some instances, violations etc etc. Lest not forget most of... more »

UNDOCUMENTED IMMIGRATION SOLUTION: SELF FUNDED DETERRENT PREVENTING THE HIRING OF UNDOCUMENTED WORKERS

I suggest a new type of proactive solution in the form of an enforcement system to deter the hiring of undocumented workers (illegal aliens, deportable/inadmissible aliens) through self funded economic incentives (monetary rewards) generated by fines. It will encourage the public to report violators and discourage employers from hiring undocumented workers. A percentage of the fines levied on employers of undocumented... more »

10-15% of Power Wasted on Idle Equipment

How would you like to save billions of dollars with one flick of your finger? There are many pieces of government owned equipment that continue to draw power even though there is no use for them during off-duty hours. According to epa.gov (http://www.epa.gov/climateleaders/documents/events/11feb_plugloads.pdf) these “power vampires” account for 10-15% of commercial power use. Monitors for example, even while off,... more »

Replace Cash

Printing money is expensive. We could save money with an automated system. I propose we show our patriotism by getting an American flag tattooed onto our hand – or some patriotic Americans can have it on their forehead. The flag will be specially coded with a small bar code under it that is unique for every citizen. A database will keep track of each person’s accounts. To enforce this system, cash will become void... more »

Green Day Initiative

I suggest we have a "Green" day where we turn off any lighting or power sources not needed for the day such as, overhead lighting, unused printers, or anything that absorbs power. We could also do Team "Green" day where we go out and plant a tree, at the local park or location of choice. Additionally we can create information booths for anyone to ask questions about what we do, or how we are working as an agency to conserve... more »

Default Typeset

Change all default typeset to Century Gothic, which saves 30% more ink than Arial. This would result in millions of dollars in savings for the government, with a very simple change.

How to Produce Hydrogen On-Demand Instead of Storing It

We can use the device in U.S. Patent No. 4,936,961 to make hydrogen on-demand from water. The benefit is that 1) the fuel is plain water (no electrolytes added), 2) it eliminates the need for heavy, expensive hydrogen storage tanks, 3) it uses very little electrical current, 4) Device was featured in Part III of the 1998 BBC documentary “It Runs on Water” with Arthur C. Clarke.

Consolidate Data Centers

Consolidate and eliminate duplicative Government data centers and server infrastructure at the Federal level rather than the Department/Agency level. By more efficiently using excess data center facility and hardware capacity that currently exists within each agency, the Government will save the taxpayer millions in new server hardware investments (to include new equipment and life-cycle refresh of old equipment), annual... more »

Making Radioactive Waste Safe and Saving Money to Boot

I suggest you instruct the Department of Energy (DOE) to immediately employ the process of Nuclear Remediation to make spent nuclear fuel non-radioactive and safe. The process was developed by Paul Brown, PhD and involves bombarding nuclear waste with specific types of energy to cause it to release its stored energy and become a nonradioactive, safe substance in the process. The savings would be all the money we currently... more »
