Create a program (i.e. website and policy) for inter-agency sharing of training spaces

Training space in DoD is an expensive commodity. At some point, almost every office needs training space in DoD for a variety of reasons. Some mandatory training, such as Anti-Terrorism or Information Assurance, can be taught in any multipurpose room. However, occasionally training requirements will pop-up that require the use of multiple computer workstations and/or a secured environment. These kinds of rooms are expensive... more »

Create a Single USA.gov Website, Consolidating Resources and Information

I suggest you streamline the federal government's hundreds of websites to save costs and better serve the public. That in 2010 our federal government still operates upwards of five hundred independent websites places our nation’s public-sector Internet savvy somewhere in the late 1990s. The cacophony of websites wastes untold amounts of money, since every agency must not only employ new media directors to handle day-to-day... more »

UPSA: A Portable Electronic Device Used for Username Password Secure Automation

Manufacture a portable electronic device utilizing finger vein biometrics which would store usernames, passwords, and the associated domain address. The device would connect to the desktop or laptop as a peripheral- either wirelessly or usb/firewire. When the device is connected to your computer, and finger activated it would automatically populate the username/password fields upon navigating to a given website.... more »

Government-wide excess property website

I suggest the implementation of an U.S. government-wide website that allows any government agency to procure excess property for only shipping cost would save the government much money. The site would be comparable to GSA advantage, but purchasers would not have to pay for the item, they would merely have to pay/arrange shipping or pick up. This saving would be immediate. It would give the government the means to stop... more »

Timely Web Updates.

The IRS needs to update it's website with "temporary changes" to our processing timeframes. The timeframe for processing a Form 1040X has been 12-16 weeks since early 2009. The website indicates 8-12 weeks. This discrepancy costs us a lot of labor hours answering the phone to tell people the website is wrong. Wouldn't it be cheaper, and a more effective way to help our taxpayers, if our self-help tools for taxpayers... more »

Ideas for Next Year's Save Award:

1. Focus more on cross-organizational themes. Many of the ideas submitted are government-wide but are under agency categories and vice versa. Some category ideas might be the budgeting cycle, environmental (paper/energy, etc), travel, Personnel/Management, Save Award Program, etc. 2, For the agency level, incorporate as part of your KPI (suggested by the GAO) how many ideas per employee per year are generated. Agencies... more »

CUT RED TAPE with a RedTapeCutter website

Please go here to see a screen shot: http://sites.google.com/site/redtapecutter/ This is an idea designed for NASA, but if successful, it could be implemented at other agencies too. The idea saves tax payer dollars and reduces bureaucracy and red tape. I suggest that each federal agency implements a RedTapeCutter web site. The RedTapeCutter would allow you to identify a system that wastes your time and allow you... more »

publicize agency Web addresses

In the name of Open Gov, how about having federal agencies to post their web address along with their street addresses on the exterior of buildings where current physical signs reside. People often wonder walk by and wonder what the big buildings do, esp in the DC area.. Every agency has a web address. Why not advertise it? Just paint it alongside the physical street address. This is cheap simple way to engage the... more »

PUBLIC NOTICE website ONLINE to replace newspaper announcements

Our office alone spends thousands of dollar per month and countless hours making announcements in print newspapers (A single announcement can range from a few hundred to three or four thousand dollars). Outdated and outspoken, newspapers are a communication method of the past. If the U.S. government had a unified public announcements webpage across agencies, specific to geographic areas, it would save time and money and... more »

Combined Agency Spanish-Speaking Website

Since many spanish-speaking citizens are typically wary of the U.S. Govt. (due to immigration issues, etc.), I suggest a combined (all govt. agencies) spanish language website to describe resources citizens can utilize. The website would include a toll-free hotline with spanish speakers who could answer/refer questions related to the U.S. Government. This website would be a good start to heal the distrust between spanish-speaking... more »

180° Leadership Assessment

Allow employees to participate in 180° Leadership Assessments of their managers/executives as well as themselves during their Performance Appraisals. Creating a 2-way street (versus top down) could champion greater reward linkage to performance, collaboration, and communication amongst the whole work force. Utilizing an acceptable/approved universal electronic system across government to collect and share this data... more »

On-line messaging

Let Veterans opt out of mailed appointment and other correspondance in favor of either phone or text notifications. The Vet can then call or sign-in to a secure site and see their messages. The messages are available but secure and for many younger Vets, who are used to doing things via computer, phone and text and this will be more advantageous and cheaper than using the mail. A secure website could also determine... more »

Improving All Government Website Usability

The vast majority of the public consider government websites to be wordy, unorganized, complex, and poorly constructed. I feel that there is no point making a website if no one is going to use it. Currently there are thousands of books, articles and studies that provide information on how to make websites user friendly. For example people tend to place a higher priority on the left hand side of a website, and people prefer... more »
