Use or Lose Budgets... A Bad Practice.

Get rid of Use or Lose Budgets. So much money is wasted by organizations, buying up anything and everything, so they can use their budget money out of fear of losing it the following fiscal. Instead, have a streamlined approach to funding where projects are funded by authorization instead of use or lose budgets. Example: NCI buys new furniture every year because it's in their huge budget. However, NIDCD can't afford to ...more »

GOV TRIP

I suggest you get rid of GovTrip. My last plane ticket was over $1,500. I good have booked the same plane ticket through the same carrier for $646.00.

There is something wrong with GovTrip with this happening. Plus GovTrip charges you $15 evertime you have to change something or ask a question. The travel company is no help at all.

Prisoners should farm their own food.

The government spends between $25,000-$36,000 per inmate every year, with 7.3 million people in prison. I think the government should turn the prison grounds into farm land and have the inmates farm and work for their food and raise livestock. If a prisoner should refuse to work, then they should get peanut butter and jelly or balogna sandwiches. They shouldn't walk into prison expecting a free ride. Also, the other ...more »

Let's Try Four Days a Week

Allow federal work places to go to 4 days a week. You would save millions of dollars just running from Monday to Thursday. This would also allow rest for those who have children and need that one day that children are at school/ It also reduces costs of running facilites. If someone is needing to work, let them telework that day.

Optional Early Out Retirement

Give the Option of Early Retirement since most agencies are Top-Heavy (experienced employees maxed out at the top of their pay level). This allows new hires to be made and reduces the overall payroll cost of the US Government. Savings might well be in the billions!

Get what you pay for

There needs to be a way of eliminating poor employees. We need to change this idea that you can't get fired from the government. Yes, I know you can, but you must move mountains to get it done. In this economy, if you are not doing your job or showing up for work as scheduled, you should get 3 strikes then you're out. Taxayers needs to get a honest day's work for an honest day's pay.

TeleWork - Save money and Increase Efficiency

Most employees work at the office during normal buisness hours, yet many of us do jobs that can be done at home as well, or more efficiently. Some employees at my office already go home to work on focused writing - they have fewer interuptions and find that they actually get MORE work done at home. Using the phone, instant messaging and our increasing web-based communication systems, it doesn't matter where our desk is ...more »

More Telecommuting

Instead of allowing Managers to hold back telecommuting (and they are) it needs to be expanded. New language needs to come down from the department level saying to use it as much as possible and enforce it. The President and previous President has signed off on this as has Congress but it's not getting down to the worker bees. If your position is the type where a large percentage is done on the computer or phone ...more »

Hold workers accountable and clean out deadwood

I suggest we hold workers accountable. There are far too many workers that do not work, or work very little. Salary and benefits are a huge cost and the public is always complaining about lazy government workers. It is time to change that reality. Reward those of that truly work hard and get rid of those that don't. Please clean house of all the deadwood across all agencies and departments.

Stop $10,000 Awards

Stop giving out $10,000 awards to upper management. This money could be used to help in purchasing office supplies - thus eliminating out-of-pocket expense buying supplies at office supply stores (e.g., Office Max, Office Depot, Staples, etc.).

Managers

Seek out incompetent managers: Not all managers are, but the ones that are tend to kill moral, usually succumb to showing favortism to unworthy employees. I would start by allowing employees to rate their supervisor's performance, and have it count on their appraisal every year, if there is no improvement, then demote them to a lower position with no authority and lower pay. Your team and or department is only good ...more »
