Make more forms PDF fillable and electronically deliverable

I think the gov't needs to make more of its forms PDF fillable and available to send in via email. I am shocked every time I go to fill in a form, either for business or personal reasons and find that I need to print it out and snail mail or fax it in. Faxing forms is old and becoming obsolete. In addition, paper is wasted by printing out numerous copies every time you mess up filling in the forms by hand. PDF fillable ...more »

Survey to Uncover Incompetant Managers and Improve Productivity

Survey line office employees to understand the problems they face. Many managers in government are great. But federal jobs can also be a refuge for incompetance. When that incompetance gets into management it is devastating to productivity. Survey the lowest common demnomenator in federal jobs to find out what they are collectively thinking. The benifit will be improved productivity and morale.

Save on Airfare: use regular commercial fares

Enhance commitment to cost efficiency in transportation of government employees and materials. Regarding the former, there appear to be many cases where commercially available airfares are significantly less expensive than corresponding “government” fares. Commercial airfares do carry with them the risk of cancellation and itinerary change penalties, but I believe a cost-benefit analysis would show significant net savings ...more »

Buy Instead of Rent Government Facilities

Buy the land and the buildings government offices are housed in instead of paying rent on them for years on end. This way a finite amount of money will be spent on housing an office or agency instead of a constant outpouring of government funds for rent that will never be recouped. When new buildings are built the government can recoup some of the cost of the original building if sold or even rented to a non-government ...more »

Default to Double-sided Printing

Set double-sided printing as the default setting for printers. While the goal should be to print as little as possible, printing is sometimes necessary in order to work efficiently. We can drastically reduce the amount of paper used, however, by setting government printers to default to double-sided printing, and lock in this setting if possible so that employees cannot change it back to single-sided printing. In offices ...more »

Have a 2nd "Run-off" round of SAVE Award Voting

There are too many SAVE Award suggestions in total for most of us to be able to go through all of them when voting. Why not instead implement a 2-stage voting process. The first round would be what’s happening now, but the suggestion here is to then add a 2nd round of voting on just the top 20 (or 50) vote getters from the first round – to narrow it down to the 4 or 5 finalists. (My apologies if this idea is already ...more »

Optional 30-Hour Work Week for Federal Agencies

For those who prefer fewer hours and don't mind the corresponding decrease in income, make a 30-hour work week a standard work schedule option for federal employees and contractors. For jobs with a large mental component (ie high tech) it is nearly impossible for most people to stay engaged and productive for the full 40 hours. Teams would not lose productivity with this switch, but would instead gain efficiency. ...more »

Telework to reduce emissions, and to use less resources.

I believe that the government should allow its employees to telework closer to home on a more frequent basis to reduce harmful emissions, and to reduce the use of our natural resources.

Eliminate Govrnment Contracted Airlines for travel

I entered this suggestion last year for this award. I suggested that the Government do away with Contracted airlines. I travel quite often. The Government rate is 3 to 4 times higher than the regular fare. The Government should allow federal employee's to use other available resources, for lower fares. The Contracted airline does not provide any benefits for the Federal Employee's. We still have to pay the baggage ...more »

"It's the Telework Stupid" :-)

Telework. Plain and simple. It works. Increases productivity. Saves energy. Improves environment. Enables workers to focus energies on work, not drawn-down mentally by commuter issues such as traffic, crowded Metro and busses, wait times, etc.

MOC-P Homeport

I suggest that you save up to $30M by maintaining NOAA's West Coast Fleet in Seattle, WA. The cost savings of relocating to Newport, OR, where the ships will rarely be will due to NO industrial support in the region. (Just ask the OSU ship support staff where they do most of their industrial work), coupled with the estimated $7-8 M moving the present NOAA employees, if they move, which if they don't the loss of hundreds ...more »

Reward agencies for spending under their budget

As it stands now, each agency is penalized if it does not spend its budget in two ways: (1) it loses what's left in the budget and (2) will very likely receive a smaller budget the following year. As a result, each agency has a strong incentive to spend every dollar. Offer agencies incentives to save money such as no loss of budget savings, etc. (an economist could come up with better ones than I).
