Get what you pay for

There needs to be a way of eliminating poor employees. We need to change this idea that you can't get fired from the government. Yes, I know you can, but you must move mountains to get it done. In this economy, if you are not doing your job or showing up for work as scheduled, you should get 3 strikes then you're out. Taxayers needs to get a honest day's work for an honest day's pay.

Eliminate requirement to book travel through government contracted travel companies.

I recommend eliminating the requirement to book air travel through a government contracted travel company (Sato). I recently was required to book a flight to attend training in Huntsville, Al. The flight cost $1000 more to book through Sato than to book through a non contract internet site. Eliminating this requirement could save the government a substantial amount of money.

Stop giving out awards for staff just doing their jobs

Each year, their are thousands of dollars given out in incentive awards (i.e. special act awards), for staff who are merely doing their jobs. This is a big waste of alot of money. If staff have to be given an award for a morale booster, then they shouldn't be there. Believe me, being realistic, not pessimistic, there are many people out there who would love to have a government job. And they wouldn't need these nonsense ...more »

Save money on government travel expenses

It is a requirement of government travel that we book travel through the contract travel agency and that we book refundable tickets. We all know refundable tickets are hugely expensive. I think the government could save millions of dollars if DOJ (and other federal agencies) purchased non-refundable tickets even if there would be situations where trips are cancelled and fees would be imposed.

Farming Programs to be implemented within the Bureau of Prisons

I suggest to develop a farming program within the Bureau of Prisons to enable the government to cut costs on food supplies purchased. This will enable inmates to have work and to grow their own food and become educated on gardening as well as farming procedures. We already have inmates at the Camps working the grounds and mowing. This would be good for Campers, Low and Medium inmates to have gardens. Also, when you ...more »

R. Walker Cook Supervisor, USP Hazelton, WV

Working as a Cook Supervisor for the Federal Bureau of Prisons, two separate menus are offered to inmates. One is a regular menu and one is a heart healthy menu. The regular menu should be eliminated and all foods should be served heart healthy. For example, there is no nutritional difference between french fries and a baked potato, fried chicken and baked chicken, etc. Making this change would save a lot of money. ...more »

Illegal Immigrants

We need to start cracking down on illegal immigrants and the companies that employ them. These individulas typically do not pay taxes and yet regularly use public services that cost taxpaying citizens more money. Let's work on getting these individuals legal or get them out of the country. Let's start first with the criminals who not only eat up our resources but also endanger our paying citizens.

Solar Panels, are Green, and they Save!

Utlize FDC Honolulu's Roof space to add solar panels. This would Greatly reduce the cost of FDC Honolulu's yearly $1.5 million dollar electric bill. Also adding a covered parking lot with solar panels on the the roof of that, would probably eliminate the electric bill entirely. More importantly it would be great for our environment!

Seize (or stop Federal) Inmate Pensions and Use Them to Pay Incarceration Expenses

Seize (or stop Federal) Inmate Pensions and Use Them to Pay Incarceration Expenses. Currently, some inmates receive over $100,000 per year in pensions while they cost the American taxpayer over $100,000 per year in incarceration expenses. It is only fair that inmates pay their share of the costs, rather than being allowed to horde savings while costing taxpayers a fortune. Of course, any seizure would be contingent ...more »
