Federal employees can afford to - and should - do our part to control federal spending in this era of growing deficits and national debt - and especially given the plight of so many unemployed Americans. The most immediate way we can help is to recommend that the President cancel any 2011 federal pay raise.
I recommend that SSA do the following with respect to the Office of Medical and Vocational Expertise (OMVE) in the Office of Retirement and Disability Programs: (1) Employ a physician (rather than a lay civil servant) to supervise the work, work habits, and working environment of the medical consultants to ensure that SSA is "getting its money's worth." I recommend that SSA do something about the "grade inflation" that has occurred over time in the disability program; i.e., SSA should examine the current GS grade structure in the disability program and revise it. This is somewhat related to several comments that have pointed to the need for job commitment among new hires, the inappropriate expectation among new hires for rapid advancement, and the sense of "entitlement" ...more »
