Instead of allowing different VHA offices to hire their own geographers, put all geographers in one shop where they may not only achieve critical mass but exert greater influence and authority. Maybe they could standardize station identifiers and Community Based Outpatient Clinic (CBOC) identifiers so we could work with better quality data.
I suggest hiring a Linux/UNIX consulting shop to evaluate VHA computer systems. The Austin mainframe and here and there small servers running Microsoft Windows Server make for a file sharing nightmare. A proposal, even from a self-interested IT consulting shop, to unify these systems within 5 years, could save lots of money and allow technical staff with UNIX skill sets to work far more productively.
