Construction Guide Specifications

I suggest considering reviewing the use and maintenance of the Unified Federal Guide Specifications government wide. Some agencies use UFGS, others don't. The UFGS specs are mostly maintained by DOD agencies. It would promote government wide standardization, and could benefit the contracting community by using standard formats and up-to-date requirements. A single agency would be tasked with maintenance of the UFGS. The responsible agency could devote a small staff to maintain the specifications either in-house or through the use of a contractor. There would be no immediate cost savings as the maintenance is done as time allows and as 'another duty as assigned'. However, the potential cost savings for having accurate specifications that reduce construction claims could be quite significant. Note that individual agencies could still tailor the UFGS to their particular needs, which the UFGS maintenance staff could assist.
