Executive Office of the President

Discontinue early dismissal before Holidays.

The President could save over half a billion dollars by simply discontinuing an unofficial benefit that has been exercised over the last few years. The day before most/all holidays, employees are dismissed 3 hours early. There are 10 holidays. According to Bureau of Labor Statistics, the Federal Government employs more than 1.8 million civilian staff. Assuming the average hourly rate is $20 per hour… simple math… assuming only half the staff take advantage of early dismissal… eliminating this would save half a billion dollars a year.

Hours: 3

People: 900,000

Hourly rate: $20

Number of Holidays: 10

Savings: $540,000,000

I’m sure this will not be a very popular idea with the Federal employees who enjoy this extra benefit, but I suspect the average American who is footing the bill would love this idea. I am one of the staff that enjoy this benefit, but I believe this is the right thing to do; especially in today’s economy. This idea would not cost a penny to implement, could become effective immediately and only took me about 15 minutes to research. Federal employees have a generous leave benefit. I think if people want to leave early before a Holiday, then they should use annual leave.

Thank you,

Brigitte
