Eliminate PCOM!!!! PCOM, The software program in which all Social Security business is run is so ancient it is embarrassing. When I first saw the program, 6 years ago when I started this job, I laughed aloud and thought it was a joke. PCOM looks like it was created in the 80's, and in the 6 years since I started it has not been replaced. It has hundreds of different problems from lack of interfacing between sub-programs, limitations on processing which require manual overrides, and an amazing amount of time required to learn how to accurately function within the software for newly hired people, to an inability to recognize capital and lower case letters in names, accents on names, limitations on characters within names and limitations on characters usable to write a report within the system.
There is no reason why the agency should not make it a top priority to create, from scratch, a user-friendly software program, which can actually process the claims, and inputs needed in every instance that we come across. The amount of time wasted on a daily basis by everyone in the agency by re-typing the same information over and over again from one program to another (i.e. RPS to MCS to MISSICS, for just an address change!!) is daunting. If the time taken for wasteful data entry was actually calculated I wouldn't be surprised if the savings would calculate in the millions, if not billions of dollars in the long run. It takes me 15 extra minutes to do an A101, which MCS should be able to figure out on it's own if it wasn't archaic. It take me about 10x longer to do a 450 input correctly, and even then I have to wait until the next day to see if I did it correctly.
I could go on for hours about what is wrong and ridiculous about PCOM. However, if you have ever seen it, you already know. Please, for the love of God, get rid of it.
