The Federal Government continues to grow, even while the bad economy causes layoffs, furloughs, foreclosures, etc. for many individuals, the private sector, and state governments. Federal government workers should share in (i.e., "redistribute") the Nation's suffering by facing (at the very least) across the board loss of cost of living increases and modest pay cuts of 5 to 10 percent (tied to the unemployment rate). The money saved could help pay for various recovery programs such as credits to small business for job creation, retraining to move unemployed individuals into expanding areas such as health care, and refinancing programs aimed at avoiding foreclosure.
True compassion involves suffering WITH those affected. Effective and compassionate recovery programs might be implemented more quickly if Federal goverment workers' pay were tied to the health of the economy.
