Too many large businesses and institutions, including the government, pay for recyclables to be collected when they should be getting paid! Most large businesses are paid for their recyclables, assuming they produce a reasonably large volume and markets to sell the materials to are close. Yet even in a state like Georgia, where we are surrounded by markets (carpet mills to the north, paper mills to the south, and Coca-cola right in Atlanta), we’re still PAYING to have recyclables picked up, even as close neighbors are making money from recycling. The people who make waste management contracts need to be better informed about what they should be looking for. If we want “Going Green” to make financial sense, we need to start here by getting the best prices we can for our recyclables.
