M/NM Mine Inspectors Travel and stay weeks at a time in multiple locations costing between $350.00 and $625.00 per inspector per week in hotel costs alone. In alot of cases the Government could rent houses in certain high travel areas for a quarter of the cost saving hundreds of thousands of dollars in hotel bills.
Limit all non-Executive Federal personnel training and meeting travel such that 50% or more of such hours are done annually by web-cast, teleconference or other electronic means. This will massively reduce costs of travel, hotel lodging, food and other perks currently paid at Federal expense for a select few.
Allow employees to make all hotel reservations themselves instead of going through GovTrip. This would save $4 per reservation. Plus it is just as easy to make the reservation yourself.
Currently OPM per diem rates for travel (TDY) are set so that the lodging rate is a 'use it or lose it' system whereby money not spent on lodging is returned to the government. This fosters an environment where most government travelers don't spend any time looking for the best rate. In fact, in many cases the upper limit is what travelers look for so that they can maximize their frequent traveler program points.... more »
