Efficient Vehicles Not Enough

A few years ago, I bought a used govt. vehicle at auction for $3000. It was 5 years old but had only 18,000 miles on it. I got many years of excellent service from it. It is very common for government vehicles to be used very infrequently and for only short trips. The use of alternate-fuel vehicles will help but is not enough. Use The Most Fuel-Efficient Vehicles Available For The Application

All US Government agencies and other affected entities (such as grantees and contractors) shall procure increasing percentages of the most fuel-efficient vehicles available for the application, including hybrid-electric vehicles, as part of their annual vehicle acquisition plans. GSA Fleet Sharing and Accountability Could Save $6Billion and Environment

GSA has about 212,000 vehicles in its fleet divided among 75 federal agencies. Most of these vehicles are assigned to individuals ie. one vehicle one man. Last year alone, GSA spent $287 Million to buy 17, 205 new vehicles to its fleet bringing the new number to about 220, 205 vehicles.
