Eliminate or modify the customer service surveys that contractors send government employees each time after we contact them for help. It takes employee time to answer these, and I wonder if the government has any idea whether these surveys are useful or not? Determining they are worth employee time would be difficult. Instead provide a website where gov employees can submit a complaint about the service if it isn't... more »

Returning unused appriations

All agencies should be required to return all funding at the end of the year that is left over after all expenses for it's operations have been met.

Spending extra appriated funds on frivilous things such as furniture, more travel etc. is a waste of tax payer money.

Use all the ideas submitted here that are good! Hopefully you have a system of selecting all good ideas and sending them to the appropriate agency, not just the 1 or 2 top winners? It would be a waste of our time as well as a lost opportunity to use the good ideas if all were discarded except the top winner. Although the criteria for 'top winner' aren't posted, presumably the winner is one that saves the most money,... more »

Buy Fuel in Bulk

Allow Dept of Interior Agencies such as USGS and USFWS to purchase fuel for boats and trucks in bulk and allow on site storage of the fuel at each research center. This will eliminate the retail purchase of fuel for research vessels and vehicles therefore saving money.

I suggest that a grant can be created for schools to buy laptop computers for each classroom and also with this grant that school can buy electronic books and materials. This would not only save money, but also save on the environment. In our schools there are storage areas full of outdated books and materials that must have cost millions of dollars. With the computer savoy skills of our young american students, schools... more »

Utilize the USPS more often

mandate the use of the US Postal Service when applicable. There are times when Fed-Ex/ UPS overnight are required but it is used all too often because it is convenient. The US Postal service will provide reliable service at a reduce cost benefiting both the Government and the USPS.

Government-wide travel

I recommend that we totally redesign the entire government travel system. Instead of annually establishing government per diem rates and contracting with travel agents who charge excessive fees and rarely get the best available rates offered to preferred customers, GSA should be tasked with directly negotiating government-wide contracts with airlines, major hotel chains and rental car companies that are ready and willing... more »

Cut training/reference materials in half

Community Member kudos icon +
Community Member
As a Govt. employee, I have attended several trainings and it seems I always walk away with a huge binder (2"-4" thick) of training material inside. The pages are printed on 1 side. If they were printed on both sides, it would not only reduce paper usage (Paper Reduction Act), but storage space in the office would be cut in half. Also if more than one employee from a department/agency attends the same training, why... more »

Carry over "Year-End" money into the next Fiscal Year

Community Member kudos icon +
Community Member
Federal Government offices around the country struggle to spend all of the money in their budget by the end of each fiscal year, often purchasing items or contracts that they don't really need just to spend the money. Often, a given station may need a big ticket item that they can't afford, such as a large piece of equipment, buidling renovation, or temporary employee, but the office may never have enough year end money... more »

Surveys and Studies

Community Member kudos icon +

Our agencies run on information and this often means studies and surveys. It appears to me that many agencies need the same or similar information. These surveys are often contracted out and can cost hundreds of thousands, possibly millions, of dollars to do - per survey. If a system could be established where agencies could pool their resources and work on surveys and studies together, it could save millions of dollars.... more »

Use of Computer Based Regulatory Training

Community Member kudos icon +

Use a computer based training package for regulatory annual training. This would allow new employees access to the needed training when hired. Allow groups or units to have employees train individually versus having a whole group training and not in the work place a given time. Also it would eliminate travel when employees missed training at their location and needed to go somewhere else to makeup the training. It would... more »

The goal is to relieve the NPS of reliance on Utility and Fuel expenses through a variety of Clean Energy production projects within the Parks (Solar, Wind, Hydroelectric, Geothermal, Thermal-Solar) and a series of cooperative agreements with Universities that are breaking new ground in alternative fuel options (Ex: Bio-Diesel/MS State U). Clean energy projects within the Parks will be designed not to infringe upon the... more »

Revamp travel processes

I think that the most money could be saved by rethinking travel. As it is now, we use contact travel agencies. Most of these "travel agencies" are are online and automated. Yet, we are being charged a minimum of $13.50 just for the travel agency to issue each authorization and voucher that could be handled internally. We also pay the fee to book flights, as well as having to deal with greatly inflated flight prices. I... more »

Hire more permanent subject to furlough employees which takes base money but keeps employees longer. For background investigations, we spend at least $110. per new seasonal/temp/term employee per 100 employees each year at one National Park. Make it easier to get the perm jobs and quit spending the "soft" money each year on junk and temps.
