Collective effort for budget stabilization

Prohibit any budget increase for half of the cabinets in the executive branch in FY 2011, then do the same for the other half of the cabinets in FY 2012. Then, cap any budget increases for any cabinet and/or department at 2 percent for two years straight. All of us, including VA and DOD, can get by on what we are spending for at least one year. Every branch of the government needs to come up with ways to save money,... more »

Scratch This! (Pad, that is).

I have a suggestion to save money - government wide. I call it "Scratch this! (pad, that is)."

This is a very simple idea with huge cost-savings. When I was in the private sector, I worked at a hotel/resort that conducted business with a printing company (letterhead, business cards, etc.)

We were constantly steno pads, tablets of paper, etc., for folks to jot down notes (even though those notes were of a temporary... more »

Treat veteran compensation claims as you would treat battlefield wounds

Process VA compensation claims as you would treat soldiers on the battlefield, that is: identify their needs as soon as possible, get them to the right place, in the hands of the right expert - and demand they be treated as expeditiously as safely possible.

Create a joint VA/VSO/DOD task force to triage backlogged compensation claims. Task force will categorize claims into no more than 10 priority and classification... more »

Cell Phones for Homeless Veterans

I suggest that the Department of Veterans Affairs provide pre-programmed cell phones (with numbers to the VA, suicide help-line, etc) to homeless veterans with frequent hospital admissions to allow for improved communication with their case managers, mental health providers and primary care team. The cost savings if a veteran could utilize their phone to assist in getting an appointment instead of going to the ER or... more »

Make Electronic Filing Work to save money and paper

this is a small idea, but it would save money and paper.... we have switched to electronic filing, but there are two ways in which we have not caught up. (1) we continue to be provided with sets of 3 file labels which are printed out before the case is assigned. One label is on the litigation folder, the other two are placed inside the folder for labelling the record on appeal, despite the fact that we no longer need... more »

Create a national veteran education benefit contract

Create a national contract for education benefits for veterans - billed to a single payer station in VA (similar to a GSA schedule). Veteran may choose any university where they can be accepted at the negotiated contract rate. Offer veterans incentives to choose lower priced accredited education, such as online programs - and the veteran will receive 25% of cost savings or extended benefits.

Green house/ community garden

Why don't we have a green house/ community garden to grow food or even flowers-ornamental plants? I'm sure there are alot of volunteers who are willing to help out and employees who are willing to participate. Helps beautify the earth, pleasure in eating and harvesting our produce, heathier, great sense of community and relaxation. I'm sure with all the land the government have, there must be a section somewhere... more »

STOP promoting high school graduates to management positions in VBA!!!

One half of the management team in our VBA Regional Office are high school graduates. Promotion is based on friendship and not credentials!! Our veteran's deserve the best qualified employees to serve them. Enough said! STOP PROMOTING HIGH SCHOOL GRADULATES TO MIDDLE AND SENIOR LEVEL MANAGEMENT POSITIONS. IT DOESN'T WORK!!

USE BETTER QUALITY DENTURE TEETH TO SAVE MONEY

I suggest the dental departments begin to use ipn/apn/composite teeth in there denture patient more, the plastic teeth used do not have the material hardness to withstand the normal stresses involved in tooth replacment in either full or partial dentures. plastic stains quicker fractures easier and needs to be replaced years earlier the the hardened materials that can be used, which in turn involves earlier replacment,... more »

kimguard savings

THE GOAL IS TO SAVE MONEY. By switching from 30 day expiration dates on our sterile items to event related storage as all the other hospitals do like yhe cleveland clinic. This would save a tremendous amout of money that we spend on kimguard wrap every month.because currently we are wasting wrap & money by re wrapping items that are still sterile.
