Double-sided printing

It's simple yet effective: Make sure all computers have the double-sided printing default setting in place. As a result, we will waste less money on paper, and save some trees at the same time. It's a win-win situation.

Save the Landscape while saving money, wildlife, people, the environment, and create accomplishment for employees

I suggest we stop the planting and changing of plants in all the areas where we currently have landscape contractors doing this work. It is a waste, done too often and not environmentally friendly as we do not use perennials, but actually throw away good plants! Instead, let an office or a group of volunteer employees "Adopt a garden", like we adopt a highway or street. Let that group of people decide to grow a garden... more »

Paperless Office

Mandate electronic sign-off. In my division we currently print out the letter we are sending up to the division director for sign-off, and print out a memo explaining the letter. Both printouts get stapled into a folder with a paper sign-off sheet on the front. The letter first goes to the section chief. If the chief wants an edit, they mark up your letter and give it back. you make the changes and re-print. Then... more »

Clean Air at coal fired power plants

Community Member kudos icon +

The EPA should quit politics and enforce clean air rules at ALL coal power plants. The technology exists for coal fired plants to put out cleaner air than they take in. It just has to be installed at all the coal power plants. Forget the cost and force them to install clean air stacks and scrubbers. No more lying cap and trade for people to rich off of and keeping poluting the air. The time to clean the air is now,... more »

Travel Savings

Regarding travel: purchase non-refunding airline tickets in lieu of fully refundable tickets. The savings realized would be more than sufficient to cover any losses due to cancelled flights and would significantly reduce travel cost for the government.

Qualifications

I suggest that you re-examine the basic qualifications requirements for applicants. We ask for resumes yet we are still required to see if they worked 40 hours per week (pro rate if less). Since most resumes do not include this, people are not being considered for jobs because of ineligibility.

Ensure EPA/Federal Employees Work from Green Buildings

Ensure that EPA employees, and federal employees – particularly in agencies with environmental-related missions/work, are working from “green” buildings across the entire agency, whether the federal work space is owned or leased! When leased, ensure that contracts for leased space are awarded to “Green” companies. It is amazing that the EPA is not yet fully “green” across the board. Mind you, we do have some excellent... more »

To support mandated Hiring Reform initiative now underway that applicants to federal jobs will be able to submit resume/cover letter: 1) Have OPM provide guidance BEFORE Nov. 1 to potential applicants and agencies on USAJobs regarding what information is prohibited from being included in a resume/cover letter for federal employment consideration -- for example, photos of the applicant, statements regarding marital/parental... more »

Reduce air travel through desktop videoconferencing

Reduce air travel through desktop videoconferencing. The size of the air travel budget and size of the jet-fuel carbon footprint could be greatly reduced if air travel to attend workgroup meetings was more thoughtfully chosen. The number of fly-in meetings should be reduced, and the use of effective, efficient videoconferencing be increased. Note the emphasis on "effective" and "efficient". Our office has videoconferencing,... more »

Paperless Campaign Days

Federal Government Wide there should be Paperless Campaign Days instituted once a month, where agencies strive to reduce the amount of paper we use for that day. The day should consist of signs throughout Government buildings requesting that employees consider Not Printing documents and use alternatives to printing such as scanning and saving. The Paperless Campaign days will help to save the Government millions of dollars... more »

GovTrip - Travel Costs

Community Member kudos icon +
Community Member

GovTrip is a travel system used by multiple agency's and departments across the government. Air travel costs under GovTrip appear excessively high compared to obtaining rates independently via the internet or previous travel systems used by the government. Recommend considering other options to drive down air travel costs across the government sector.
