let's get off the grid- develop energy solutions for homeowners

develop and commercialize an electricity generating technology such as hydrogen fuel cells for use by homeowners to suplement or replace electricity usage. This would reduce electricity demands on electricity providers and make individual homes and homeowners more self-sufficient. Would be able to integrate with solar and wind technologies depending on local conditions.

Small changes make a Huge difference....

Each year each Federal organization implement a similiar process locally. Employees submitt ideas on a "SAVE" award that are applicable to their own department or office. I think if every organization implemented just one idea within their own office then the cost savings will be huge. People will feel like their ideas are being heard and are welcomed. Morale could improve and teamwork could be more embraced. Ideas... more »

Clearance Verification

Have one central clearance database that is updated on a daily basis. The red tape that is involved in passing/receiving clearances takes forever. It would be great it collateral clearances could be verified and updated in a database that is assessable on a classified network. I have posted this under the Department of Energy, but it would/could also be used for any government agency that passed clearances. It would... more »

Mandatory Solar in Southwest.

OK, this one is specific.

Establish a regulation and/or pass a law that requires every new home/building and/or roofing project in the Southwestern United States to install full spectrum Solar Panels (on said roof) with the minimum capability to provide 110% of the estimated power output of the building. This cost could be written into the cost of building the home/building and offset by the homeowner not having any... more »

Mandate Alternative Energy for Federal Facilities

The gov't should be leading the way with alternative energy. It is time to mandate that all federal facilities develop a plan to run at 50% on alternative energy. Alternative energy is available through windmills, water generators, solar power and synthetic fuels. By forcing federal facilities to move to alternative energy, it reduces costs to the taxpayers and same valuable resources. I would much prefer to see a... more »

Consolidated NQA-1 Qualified Suppliers List and Strategic Procurements for Nuclear Construction

DOE/NNSA have multiple large nuclear facility construction projects under design (UPF, PDC, CMRR). Each project is developing and maintaining their own lists of vendors that are qualified to supply materials for their projects. There is large potential cost savings through consolidation of these efforts into an enterprise wide solution by development of an NNSA-wide or DOE-wide qualified suppliers list for use by multiple... more »

Each organization complete a six sigma lean event

Have each organization complete a six sigma event to streamline their processes to reduce waste. I know the organization I work with has implemented new ideas out of the air and sometimes performs additional work than that is what required. It needs to be determined if this additional work efforts are actually needed and are benificial. A lean six sigma may find numerous ways to streamline processes and reduce waste.... more »

Inetgrated Project Management Software

Combine IDC, PMC, Winsaga and PAGE into a single cohesive database and project management software. The amount of time wasted by translating information across several databases is shameful. The DOE needs an integrated solution for its program/ project management. This would help end the endless stream of data calls and time spent translating from PMC into IDC. It seems every new program re-invents the same Project Management... more »

Save Energy, Create Jobs-Remodel

Remodel government building to take advantage of newer energy efficient ideas such as the use of Geothermal heating and cooling. We could also use construction techniques that could capture solar heat during the winter to offset heating cost associated to the winter. Wind-turbines, solar power, and the possible use of micro-hydro electric stations could help offset costs as well as offset the carbon footprint created... more »

Internal travel and training

I suggest you enact strict restrictions on internal agency travel and training. For example, travel inside the agency that could conducted by video conference and office meeting/conferences that are conducted at hotels or anywhere that charges a fee. In these times we can use video conferences and have our meetings in an agency conference room. Offsite meetings are a luxury we cannot afford in these times.

Elimintate bus service at INL

At the Idaho National Labortory, most site workers ride busses to and from the Idaho Falls and outlying areas to work. This bussing system (government furnished) is made up of several dozen modern busses, a large bus maintenance shop and infrastructure costing millions of dollars per year to operate. My solution is to elminate this service. At Hanford, we had a similar bus system that was a left-over from the cold war... more »
