Housing Program Manager

I suggest that all federal agencies use cloud computing. By purchasing space on privately owned network servers such as Google the federal government can save money by not having to purchase and maintain their own network servers. This would also allow our constituents one-stop-shop type acces to information from all federal agencies.

Shared IT Workstations

I suggest the utilization of shared (joint use) IT workstations to access software programs that are infrequently used by employees.
Often enough, users request software licenses for programs they hardly use, often costing agencies $500 or more a seat not including the time and labor to purchase and install.
Agencies should modify IT rules so that joint use workstations can be set up, locations and quantities may vary,... more »

White Roofs for Government Buildings

Agency roofs are routinely repaired or repainted. GSA and OMB should require, where feasible, that when an Agency roof is repainted or newly constructed, that it be white to reflect heat and reduce energy bills. Agencies spend around 5% of their total budget on infrastructure and utility expenses, totalling billions across the whole Federal family. Nearly half of all utility costs come from heating and cooling. AC requires... more »

Savings for being a Senior Citizen

As a greater number of employees are in the Senior Citizen category, there are many local and state programs for Seniors which could be used by these employees to save the government funds. One of these is the reduced commuter rail fair for seniors in MA.

There are potientially many other programs for seniors which could save money.

Reclaim Unclaimed Agency Funds

Reclaim monies owed to federal agencies in unclaimed funds held at each state's Secretary of State Office of the Comptroller. All you have to do is make the request. The funds meant for federal agencies come from dormant escrow accounts, impound funds, misspelled payee names from thousands of different sources for thousands of different reasons but no one seems to be in charge of collecting the funds that remain dormant... more »

Business Casual Summer Dress Code + Less A/C

Why are federal employees required to wear suits and ties during the D.C. summer? The summer dress code for all federal workers should be changed to business casual [including golf shirts] and the ambient indoor temperature of office buildings should be increased to 74 degrees. Employees will be more comfortable at work and commuting on mass transit, no more complaints about overly air conditioned offices, and the government... more »

Maximize the use of paper

I suggest to mandate all IT departments nationwide to program all network connected, computers, printers and copy machines for printing documents using both sides of the paper. Most of the network connected hardwares are enabled with this feature.

The "print in both sides" policy could be enforce by making this as a default feature for making the staff printing most of the internal documents using both sides of the... more »

Change Airfare Costs/Contracts

Current airfare costs for Government employees is overly expensive. Part of that is due to the flexibility in being able to cancel or change flights at a moments notice without paying any additional cost. However, we're paying hundreds of dollars more per ticket just to have that flexibility when a majority of travelers don't change flights. Meanwhile, if Government had the flexibility to choose regular airfare prices,... more »

Hand dryers installed in all government facilities

Hand dryers should be placed in all government facilities as an option to dry hands. Hand dryers can cut costs by as much as 90%, when compared to paper towels. Paper towels need continuous refilling and waste removed. The switch would result in thousands of trees being saved per year. Additionally, landfill waste would be reduced as well. Furthermore, to produce the paper towels thousands of gallons of water and chemicals... more »

Train Locally – Use Existing FEB Training in 28 Locations Across U.S.

Large cost savings could be gained if federal leaders were encouraged to train their employees in the cities they work. Approximately 88% of the Federal Workforce is located outside of Washington D.C.

This is better for the environment and will save the federal government in travel and per diem costs.

Federal training already exists in 28 large cities through the Federal Executive Boards (www.Feb.Gov). FEB sponsored... more »

Centralized Graphic Materials Resource

Every year government agencies spend millions of dollars buying stock photos, line art and fonts for use in agency publications and on websites which are already owned by other federal agencies and are no longer being used. By developing a resource database for these items, agencies could save millions of dollars by offering these items to other agencies instead of purchasing additional copies.

Savings in Real Estate

Department of Defense maintains numerous bases and facilities that are in the process of being decommissioned. These facilities are in locations that run parallel to locations that other government agencies would like to be. The bases and facilities have established buildings and infrastructures, as well as safety and security measures in place. The locations are prime real estate properties and are already under the... more »
