Pay No More than Retail

I suggest that government mandates that it will not pay more than the retail listed price for any expenditure. I find the fact that we pay more for cell phones and computers than a consumer who does not buy in bulk to be a major problem.

Change the monetary system utilizing two specific approaches as follows:

Firing Employees Who Do Not Show Up for Work

I suggest the government use the same practice as private industry does when an employee doen't show up for work repeatly. It would take less than a week for Private Industry to fire the employee. The government can take up to 6 months to fire an employee. Money is wasted by going thru various processes. If an employee does not come to work repeatly, then fire the employee.

Clearances should be transportable amongst government agencies

Security clearances are used by multiple agencies (DoD, DOE, DNFSB...) but there is no reciprocity between agencies. A Q-clearance granted by DoD should be "portable" if the employee goes to DOE and requires a Q-clearance for that job. Clearances are very expensive (paperwork, investigations, interviews, etc) and the delay in obtaining the new clearance prevents the employee from being fully productive when the join... more »

Telecommuting: Benefits the government, the employee, and the enviroment.

Employees whose work does not actually require their physical presence be allowed to telecommute from home. Saves on pollution emissions. Doing everything electronic saves on paper waste, and cost of paper and printers. Working from home the employee pays for the electricity required to run computer instead of government. Telecommuting

Let workers who are able, telecommute a few times a week. This would save energy (energy used by the employee in the building, gas would be saved from driving too). Work should be measured in quality and quantity (productivity), not by how well an employee is dressed when they come to work and socializes.

After a recent stint at one of the FLETC, it became blatantly obvious exactly how much in government funds is wasted via the government's contracts with travel agencies such as Sato/GetThere. An attempt to book a flight from New York to Charleston, which included a layover in Georgia, netted the contracted travel agency $1299+ taxes/fees, while a direct flight could have been booked through the airline's website at $180+... more »
