Make it easier to reward hard work and penalize slackers

Its hard for managers reward people who do a great job. (Some Federal workers do work hard!) Others join the Federal governemnt and then stop working very hard after a year because they know that it is hard to fire them. A system needs to be set up so people who do work hard can get rewards, and people who do a lousy jobs dont get to keep theirs at the same pay as those who do a decent job.

Switch from full fare airline tickets to non-refundable tickets

Why is the government still paying for full-fare, fully-refundable tickets for official travel? I think that we could make huge savings if we were allowed to buy discounted internet fares. Even with last minute changes or cancellations (and the associated fees), it would still be a savings to switch from the current system. Below is an example for a recent trip going from Washington, DC to Geneva, Switzerland, to Bahia,... more »

4 10 hr workdays

I believe it would be beneficial if most government agencies work 4 10 hr days. This would reduce the cost of overhead on heating, cooling and commuter traffic congestion/pollution. I do not believe it would hinder the jobs that we do and for those mission critical employees, perhaps they would need to work every other week 5 days. In addition, most federal agencies are not promoting teleworking. I believe it should... more »

Hire additional OIG investigators to fight fraud

I suggest you add additional employees to Office of the Inspector General to handle fraud cases.

I work at Social Security. We are continually frustrated when we discover obvious cases of fraud such as identity theft or fraudulent use of Social Security beneftis. We refer the cases to the OIG office to investigate and it is returned to us stating OIG will not investigate.

In the past OIG has presented brief workshops... more »

Plain Language for Describing Medical Services to Seniors

To help seniors better understand what their health care providers are billing/charging the Medicare program, beneficiaries' Medicare Summary Notices should include plain language about services billed to Medicare by inpatient and outpatient providers. Most seniors do not understand the scientific and medical names of certain diseases and body parts. Therefore, they may not be able to report fraud and abuse. By using... more »

Power down computers when not in use!

Encourage computer users to shut down computers at night if they are not in use. This will not only save the power that the computer uses while sitting idle, but it will cause the computer to generate less heat, meaning cooling systems will also use less power as well. A hidden benefit is that the computers will last longer before component failure, as just being on, whether in use or not, ages the computer faster than... more »

Incentives for Non-Smokers

Provide incentives such as 20% off the health care premiums for non-smokers. Smoking is the #1 killer and contributes to thousands of health issues. Also, smokers are less productive since they are FORCED to take multiple 20-30 minute breaks per day to yield to their habit. The ONLY incentive for people to take care of themselves if cash money. The reduction in the health premium could be countered with a simple raising... more »

WIC Program Overhaul

Change the WIC program. Right now the WIC coupons for baby formula are only for expensive name brand formulas, which costs twice as much as generic formula. WIC coupons should be for generic brands, which contain the same ingrediants, vitamins, minerals, DHA, etc. Mothers could get twice as much formula for their babies for the same cost. This same thing can work for juice and other items. WIC coupons should be for... more »

Stop Paying to Recycle!

Too many large businesses and institutions, including the government, pay for recyclables to be collected when they should be getting paid! Most large businesses are paid for their recyclables, assuming they produce a reasonably large volume and markets to sell the materials to are close. Yet even in a state like Georgia, where we are surrounded by markets (carpet mills to the north, paper mills to the south, and Coca-cola... more »

Use Technology

Technology exists to telework, videoconference, sharepoint and do everything our administrative jobs require from a remote site. We don't need to pay high cost of living for people to live/work in the metro area anymore - let us live where we want and take a paycut to work from remote sites outside the DC area.

Reduce contractors and let feds do technical work

Quit outsourcing so much of the technical work!
I have a MS in a technical discipline (paid for by the US govt), years of hands-on experience in mid-tier and mainframe systems and over 20 years with the federal government, yet CMS has decided to "contract out" every facet of technical work. We'll even overpay for a contractor to construct and manage a basic excel spreadsheet.
As an example, do an audit on the Oracle... more »

Sell new/unused Gov. Equip to employees/public. Saving Landfills from unnecessary trash

Offer computers, printer, furniture, ink cartridges, misc. office supplies, etc. to employees at a low discounted rate.
Whatever is unwanted for purchase from government employees; create a website that the public could go on and purchase the new/used equipment also at a low discounted rate.
I receive emails asking if any offices have an need for something and if noone replies; those items become trash.
These items should... more »
